Tech for Democracy

1. We get the right tech people involved.

Tech for Democracy gets tech-native people who share our values into governance. More of the right people in the rooms where policy is made. We are the front door, not another place to donate.

2. We lead with our democratic values, not a label.

Call us what you want. We are not running from any labels, and we are not going to spend our time arguing about them. We are going to tell you what we believe and let you decide what to call it. We believe in freedom, truth, accountability and in using technology for good.

3. The future should not be written by and for oligarchs.

We aim to be a counterweight to the tech oligarchy that currently exerts outsized influence over public policy with people and programs that serve the public interest and actually make everyone's lives better.

What we believe about democracy

  • Democracy and the rule of law, no exceptions
  • Free and fair elections, and the right to vote
  • Human rights, equity, and justice for all
  • Freedom over your own body and your own life
  • A country open to immigrants, and stronger for our diversity
  • Freedom of speech and a free press
  • Power that answers to the people
  • Truth over propaganda
  • Integrity and accountability, always

What we believe about technology

  • Technology that improves all lives, not just margins
  • AI built in the open and governed for the many
  • Privacy and dignity in how data is used
  • Technology that respects the planet

4. Get in the game.

This is table stakes. Start today. Show up. Speak up. Take a stand. Post on LinkedIn and your socials. Endorse the candidates who get it. Donate to the ones worth backing. Speak up for the good bills, and against the bad ones. Let your voice be heard. When you give, give directly. One of us doing this is noise. A thousand of us together is a force.

5. Pick a door.

  • Run. For office, local to federal.
  • Work. On a campaign. Volunteer or take the job.
  • Build. Tools, apps, and infrastructure for candidates and causes.
  • Advise. Put your tech expertise in front of lawmakers, so the laws are not written by lobbyists.

6. We are not a fundraiser.

We are not ActBlue, not a PAC, and have no interest in being a pass-through fundraising arm for candidates or parties. We may encourage people to contribute directly to candidates and campaigns in ways that are meaningful to them — including financially.

We are not asking for your money for us. What we are good at is building networks and getting people to show up and act. That is what we bring to this fight.
